Food for Thought: Avoiding GMO’s

Genetically modified organisms, more commonly referred to as GMO’s, have been getting an increasing amount of press lately. Linked to infertility, spontaneous abortion, and already banned in developed countries around the world, over 95% of polled Americans say they would avoid purchasing foods containing GMO’s if products were clearly labeled as such. Unfortunately, they are not. First introduced by Monsanto in 1996, these super seeds were patented in a labratory to stand up to stronger weed killers and fertilizers, specifically Monsanto’s very own, Roundup.  Because these seeds are so new, we have no clue what affect they will have on the fertility of our future generations.  If humans follow the same trend as mice, our great-grandchildren will be almost completely sterile!  (Read the full story here.) Combine this with the fact that over 75% of prepackaged foods on the market today already contain genetically modified corn, soy, or canola oil, and this is quickly becoming scary stuff. Because genetically modified alfalfa, sugar beets, salmon, and many more are already in the works, experts warn that it is going to get worse before it gets better.

For a while now, I’ve been wanting to write an article explaining why GMO’s are so dangerous. Unfortunately, every time I started writing, I would get overwhelmed. The science behind agri-business literally makes my head spin! Then, a friend shared the link to the video featured below (via on the Healthnut Foodie Facebook page. After watching it and realizing I could embed it onto my own website, I stood up and jumped for joy! Finally, GMO’s demystified!!! In this short video from Food Documentary Now, Dr. Don Huber, Purdue Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology explains exactly how an unnamed pathogen found in GMO’s is causing crop disease, livestock infertility, and threats to U.S. food and agriculture. Think of it as Food, Inc. for GMO’s.

Okay, I am going to be completely honest with you all. For a few years now, I have been incredibly diligent about making sure that our family avoids directly consuming foods that have been genetically modified. We source organically grown corn, soy, canola oil, and the products containing them.  If we are interested in purchasing a conventional brand, we always refer to the non-gmo shopping guide before making a purchase. (You can download your free smartphone app or printable guide at For some reason, I had never really considered the affect consuming animals that were fed a GMO diet could have on my family. After watching this video, I am being forced to reconsider. Here’s my thought process: If the animal proteins we are feeding our families were fed a diet rich in genetically modified corn and soy, are we in turn consuming them as well? After all, that is the reason we source meat and dairy products free of antibiotics and artificial growth hormones. As a woman who struggled with infertility, this is most certainly something I will be pondering.

Can we afford to upgrade 100% to organic meat, eggs, and dairy?

Can we afford not to?

  1. I know I'm not as informed as I should be about this issue, but I thought that with the new law passed by Obama, it's almost impossible to tell if you are eating GMOs. Whole Foods sort of gave up on the issue…right?

  2. Isn't there a petition to sign to try to get the FDA to require labeling products? I thought I signed one a while back. Might be worth sharing with your readers if you can find it.

    Darci — Sorry for the delayed response! I spoke to a manager at our local Whole Foods and they said that they cannot guarantee that the brands they are bringing into their stores are gmo-free, because they are not personally visiting all of the farms/factories of the food they are purchasing. They also mentioned that a large part of the problem is cross-pollination issue that endangers even organic fields as well. This is why the gmo thing is such a dangerous issue! Finally, the non-organic meat/poultry etc is most likely being fed gm corn and soy as feed. Boo. yuck!
