Video: Tips for reading labels and making better choices at the grocery store

Katie Newell, Better Kansas City

Today I am super excited to share one of the videos that aired on KCTV5’s Better Kansas City last week. In it, we journeyed to a local grocery store to discuss easy ways to identify and avoid the toxins lurking in instant oatmeal. I also offered some creative alternatives that are both quick to prepare, and easy on the wallet. Keep in mind that if you decide to purchase organic instant oatmeal, you still need to read the label for total grams of sugar and fiber. To avoid a mid-morning crash, it is best to avoid varieties that contain more than 12 grams of sugar and/or less than 3 grams of fiber.

With the long holiday weekend ahead, this could be the perfect time to create some original oatmeal combinations of your own. We plan on stirring some leftover cranberry sauce or pumpkin pie filling into ours. Gobble gobble!
