Discover Children’s Mercy + Inside Pediatrics

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend a “Discover Children’s Mercy” event at Kansas City’s premiere children’s hospital. It completely changed the way I look at pediatric doctors, nurses, and caregivers. Thankfully, neither of my kiddos have been admitted to Children’s Mercy Hospital (and I thank Jesus for that everyday), so I didn’t really know what to expect. However, my mind was blown by the kindness, expertise, resources, beauty, and commitment to the community this hospital has.

We spent the morning learning about the rich history and influence Children’s Mercy has had in Kansas City. Children’s Mercy was founded in the early 1900’s by two sisters, one a dentist and one a surgeon, that truly cared about helping children. All children, regardless of their race or financial situation. I love that. Next, Dr. Aliessa P. Barnes, pediatric cardiologist and medical director of cardiac transplantation, shared all the cool things being done in the award winning heart center. You could absolutely feel the enthusiasm, passion and knowledge she had for this subject oozing out of her.

Then. THEN!!! I got to put on scrubs, head into the OR, and personally watch Dr. Plummer perform eye surgery on a 4-year old boy. She was so warm and welcoming, allowing me to get right up next to her as she worked. It filled me with so many emotions. Knowing that she was giving this boy a better quality of life left a lasting memory in my heart.

As our day came to a close, I knew I wanted to become more involved. I’ve recently entered a partnership with Children’s Mercy as a blog ambassador. Over the next few months, I will be able to share more stories of the lives being changed, as well as tips and tricks for keeping your own kids healthy and happy throughout the year. This partnership perfectly aligns with my desire to help all families become better, whatever their circumstance, and I could not be more excited.

Finally, I want to take a minute to invite you to join me virtually as I attend a watch party of Inside Pediatrics, Children’s Mercy’s Documentary Series. Season two premieres in the Kansas City area this evening, December 16, 7pm on KMBC. It will be immediately followed by a second episode at 7:30pm, and then two more episodes December 23, same times and channel.

“Inside Pediatrics is a four-part, Emmy Award-winning series following the medical journeys of families and the life-changing experiences that unfold inside Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Narrated by Paul Rudd, the series will give viewers an look inside the hospital, where dedicated staff members treat children diagnosed with conditions ranging from the common, to the complex.”

Join me this evening as we take a break from the hustle and bustle to watch this show. The stories of these courageous families will help you put your stress into perspective, encourage you to hug your babies a little bit tighter, and remind you to be grateful for the health you have.

To stay connected, be sure to follow Children’s Mercy Hospital on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and Inside Pediatrics on Facebook. If you are outside the Kansas City area, you can watch season one on Inside Pediatric’s website.
